If you’re wanting to add a personal touch to your Christmas tree, then why not consider creating your own ornaments? It might sound a lot of effort, right? But in reality it’s actually pretty simple! I’ve created this easy step by step tutorial on how to create clay Christmas tree ornaments to help get you started. I’ve even used them as gift tags for my presents- with the hope my friends and family can use them on their tree next year!
What You’ll Need:
- Polymer clay (brands such as Fimo)
- Rolling pin
- Cookie cutters or templates
- Clay tools
- Oven
- Baking sheet
- String or ribbon
- Optional extras: glitter, sequins, beads or paints for decoration
Step by step guide to making clay Christmas tree ornaments:
Step one: Preheat your Oven
Before you begin crafting, preheat your oven according to the instructions on the clay packaging.
Step two: Condition the Polymer Clay
Polymer clay needs to be conditioned before you use it. This means kneading the clay in your hands until it softens and is easily mouldable.
Don’t skip this step as it will ensure the ornaments bake evenly and have a smooth finish!
Step three: Roll Out the Clay
After conditioning your clay, roll it out until it is at your desired thickness. I usually aim for about 3mm.
Make sure your work surface is free of dust and debris before rolling out the clay.
Step four: Shape your Ornaments
If you’re wanting to create Christmas themed ornaments then why not use cookie cutters in shapes such as Christmas trees, snowflakes or stars. Call me boring, but I like a simple circular design.
Alternatively, you can freehand your design using a clay tool.
Step five: Add Detail
Now is the time to get creative! Use a needle tool, craft knife, or dotting tool to carve patterns or designs into the clay.
TIP: I like adding texture by pressing foraged leaves into the clay using a rolling pin (make sure to peel off before baking)!
Step six: Make a Hole for Hanging
In order to hang your ornament later, you’ll need to create a hole at the top. Use a straw, a skewer, or a small round tool to poke through a hole.
Just make sure it’s big enough for your ribbon or string to pass through easily.
Step seven: Bake your Ornaments
Place your shaped ornaments on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Make sure they are not touching each other, so they don’t fuse together while baking.
Follow the baking instructions on your clay packaging. Typically, they will bake in 15-30 minutes depending on their thickness.
Be sure not to overbake as it can cause the clay to burn or darken.
Step eight: Let your Ornaments Cool
Once the ornaments are done baking, let them cook completely on a flat surface before handling them.
Polymer clay becomes firm and durable once it cools, so give it time to set.
Step nine: Decorate and Personalise
Once your ornaments completely cool, you can add the finishing touches. Paint them, add some glitter or use a paint pen to add fine details like a name or year.
I’ve used a gold paint to trace the details I added in step five.
Step ten: Add String or Ribbon
To finish off your ornament, thread a piece of ribbon or string through the hole you made earlier. Tie a knot to secure the ribbon, and voila!- your ornament is ready to hang on your Christmas tree.
Extra (OPTIONAL) Step: Seal Your Ornament
If you’re happy with a matte finish, then you can skip this step. However if you want to create a glossy finish or add durability, then seal your ornaments using a polymer clay glaze.
