Easy DIY Christmas Wreath

I visited my uncles house last Christmas only to be welcomed by the biggest wreath I’ve ever seen, hung on their front door! Whilst it looked beautiful it was rather expensive! Which is why this year I decided to have a go at making one myself- from scratch. I will start by saying I have never done this before but am really pleased with the effect- so much so I decided I had to share it with you. It’s super easy, will give you and your guests a festive welcome to your home and will save you a few pennies. Perfect!

What You’ll Need

To get started, gather your materials. Here’s a basic list of supplies you’ll need to create your own wreath:

  • Wreath base: This can be a foam ring, wire wreath frame, or even a grapevine wreath. You can find these at most craft stores (I got mine from Hobbycraft)
  • Moss (large bag- I sourced mine from a local garden centre)
  • Foliage: Choose a mix of faux or fresh pine, eucalyptus, holly, or fir branches. Source these from a florist, flower market, even go foraging!
  • Floral wire
  • Ribbon or twine
  • Pinecones, berries, dried fruit slices, cinnamon sticks
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors and wire cutters

Step-by-Step Instructions for Creating DIY Christmas Wreath

STEP ONE: Attach the Twine

Start with the wire wreath and tie approximately 40cm of twine or ribbon to the top of the ring (which will be used to hang your completed wreath).

STEP TWO: Prepare the Base

If you’re using a metal wire frame start by unravelling a short piece of wire from the reel of wire and tie onto the ring. Wedge moss into the metal framing and wrap the floral wire around the frame a few times to secure it.

You won’t see the moss once the wreath is complete so pack it full. It will help keep your wreath greener for longer!

If you’re using a grapevine wreath, you can skip this step since it already has a sturdy base.

STEP THREE: Attach the Greenery

Next, begin layering your greenery around the frame. Take small bunches of pine or your chosen greenery and cut them into 15-20cm lengths.

Use the floral wire to secure them onto the wreath base. Start at one point and work your way around the wreath. Try to angle your greenery around 45 degrees to the frame.

Overlap each bunch slightly to ensure the wreath looks full. Once you attach your last bunch of foliage overlap with the first bunch of stems and tie off the wire.

STEP FOUR: Add Decorative Accents

Once the greenery is in place, it’s time to add your personal touch. You can use pinecones, berries, small dried fruit slices (like orange slices) or cinnamon sticks. Use a hot glue gun to secure these items in place. A large, decorative bow can be the centrepiece of your wreath, or you can scatter smaller bows around the wreath for a uniform look.

STEP FIVE: Hang Your Wreath

Once you’re satisfied with your wreath, it’s time to hang it up! Use a strong ribbon or a wreath hanger to display it on your front door, mantle, or anywhere in your home that could use some holiday cheer. For added security, ensure the wreath is hung in a way that will prevent it from falling or being blown away (especially if you’re displaying it outdoors).

Tips for a Long-Lasting Wreath

If you’re using fresh greenery, keep your wreath lasting longer by spraying it with water every few days. Fresh wreaths can dry out quickly, especially if exposed to heat. If you prefer a wreath that lasts the entire holiday season, opt for artificial greenery and decorations.
